Binocular Explorer

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

Make a pair of binoculars out of just a cardboard tube and some glue. What can you see through them? Maybe you will use your binoculars to play I spy, or go exploring, or in imaginative play. Have fun!

What you need:

  • 2 cardboard tubes (about 10 cm long)

or a cardboard tube e.g. kitchen towel roll cut in half

or two recycled, washed out paper cups with the bottoms cut out

  • 2 elastic bands (wide enough to stretch around the cardboard tubes/paper cups)
  • White glue, sticky tape or a stapler
  • A piece of string or ribbon about 70 cm long (optional)
  • Paint, coloured pens, or collage materials for decorating the binoculars
  • Scissors, pencil or single hole punch (optional)

What to do:

  1. Paint or decorate the two cardboard tubes (or paper cups) in anyway you like.

  2. Let the paint dry then glue, tape or staple the two cardboard tubes together.

Top tip: If you are gluing the cardboard tubes (or paper cups) together, run a line of glue down the length of one tube/cup. Press the cardboard tubes together and stretch the elastic bands around them to hold them in place. When the glue has dried, remove the elastic bands.

Your binoculars are now ready to use, but if you want to add a string, so that you can wear them around your neck, follow steps 3 to 6.

  1. Using scissors, a pencil or hole punch, punch a hole through the outer side of each cardboard tube (about 2 cm from the top). Be careful, you may need an adult to help you with this bit.

  2. Take your piece of string or ribbon and thread one end of it through one of the holes. Tie it in place.

  3. Thread the other end of the string or ribbon through the other hole. Tie it in place.

  4. Have fun looking through your binoculars and exploring the world around you.

Safety note: Be careful if you are wearing your binoculars around your neck - the string can be a choking hazard.

Activity develops:

  • Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
  • Language skills
  • Creativity
  • Using the binoculars also encourages kids to explore and make sense of the world around them.
