Paint Print Repeating Patterns

Written by: | Posted on: | Category:

Be creative and develop your maths skills as you print with paint to make repeating pattern art. Display your art work on a wall, or fridge, or use it to make your own wrapping paper and greetings cards.

Go on a repeating pattern hunt around your house and garden.

  • Can you find any examples of repeating patterns, e.g. on wrapping paper, tiles, carpets, fabric patterns on curtains, bedding and clothes?
  • Think about the shapes and colours used in the repeating patterns, then create your own repeating patterns.

What you need:

  • Paper/card for background
  • Different coloured paints (Top Tip: use non-toxic, washable paint)
  • Recycled and clean food trays or a paint palette
  • Paint brush
  • Objects for printing with e.g. magnetic letters, lego bricks, cardboard tubes, bottle tops, sponges cut into different shapes, bubble wrap, scrunched up aluminium foil

What to do:

  1. Choose the coloured paints you want to use. Pour some of each coloured paint into a paint palette or clean, recycled food tray.

  2. Choose the object you want to print with first. Press it into the paint (or use a paint brush to paint over the part you want to print with)

  3. Press the object, paint side down, onto the paper.

  4. Repeat Steps 1 to 3 to create your repeating pattern. Experiment with using different objects and colours in your repeating pattern.

  5. Let your art work dry. Think about the shapes and colours in your repeating pattern art. Try creating repeating patterns out of other materials e.g. pens and pencils, collage

Top tip: Explore making repeating pattern art with things you find outside, e.g. fallen leaves, sticks, stones, pine cones

Activity develops:

  • Fine motor skills and hand eye coordination
  • Language skills, including mathematical vocabulary related to shape
  • Mathematical skills - copying, matching, sorting making repeating patterns, sequencing and recognising and naming shapes
  • Creativity and design
