Recycled Gift Wrap Cards

Want your kids to send thank you messages, birthday wishes or other greetings to friends and family? Get them busy and creative, recycling used gift wrap to make inexpensive personalized cards.

What you need:

  • Used gift wrap (wrapping paper)
  • Recycled ribbons, bows, tissue wrapping paper, gift tags, clean foil sweet wrappers etc.
  • Glue (Top tip: White craft glue is strong and dries clear)
  • Scissors (appropriate for child's cutting ability)
  • A piece of paper or card

What to do:

  1. Fold a piece of paper or card in half to make the card base for your art work.
  2. Put the card base flat on a surface so that the folded edge is either at the top of the card (furthest away from you) or at the left-hand side of the card.
  3. Tear or cut pieces of gift wrap, ribbon etc. and arrange them in any way you want on the front of the card. Have fun and be creative!
  4. Glue the gift wrap, ribbon etc. into place on the front of the folded piece of paper or card.
  5. Let the glue dry.
  6. If you want to, you can write a personalized message on the front of, or inside the card.
  7. Post or hand-deliver your card.

Activity develops: Fine motor and language skills and creativity. It also encourages children to develop the social skills of saying thank you and thinking about others. Read more in [Crafting with kids]
