Scratch Paper Magic
An inexpensive craft that keeps kids busy and develops creativity. Display their art on the wall, or fridge, or use it to make inexpensive personalized cards or bookmarks.
What you need:
-
Wax crayons or oil pastels
-
Paper
-
Tempura or acrylic paint
(Top tip: Black paint is the most effective but experiment with different colours)
-
Washing up liquid
-
Paint pot or a washed recycled plastic container (for mixing paint in)
-
Paint brush or sponge
-
Something to use as a scratch tool e.g. wooden cuticle pusher, toothpick, bamboo skewer, sculpting tool, old fountain pen (it needs to be quite sharp so be careful using it!)
What to do:
-
Use wax crayons or oil pastels to colour a piece of paper in any way you like.
Top tips:
Covering all of the paper with crayon or pastel and and using lots of different colours can make the finished art seem more vibrant. -
Put some paint in a paint pot and then add a squirt of washing up liquid. Mix them together with a paint brush.
-
Use a paint brush, or sponge, to paint the mixture over all of the crayon/pastel pattern on the paper. Leave it to dry. If you can still see the crayon through the paint when it is dry then paint over it again.
-
When the paint is dry, use a scratch tool to scratch away bits of the paint and create a design. Be creative, have fun!
Top tips: Use your scratch tool as if you are writing or sketching with a pen or pencil. Be careful not to scratch too hard or you will scratch through the paper.
Activity develops: Fine motor and language skills and creativity.
