Learning strategies

In writing this, I hope to share some of the learning strategies that I have used both in the classroom as a teacher, and as a mum with my own kids…

Doodling - A learning strategy?

Ask your child why they are doodling and you might be surprised at the answer.

Our first response when we see kids doodling is often, "Stop doodling and listen." Recently, I asked a child why they were doodling. Their answer,

"It keeps me calm and helps me to listen,"

reminded me that everyone learns differently and that kids often develop their own strategies for managing their challenges. It also lead to a great unplanned discussion about emotions and anxiety.

So, help your child grow:

  • Take the time to ask your child why they are doing something and really listen to their answer.

  • Let your child tell you about their learning needs and preferred learning styles and then use this knowledge to help them achieve their potential.
