Sticks, Stones and Eggs
It's great to get outside without wooly hats and gloves and hearing the birds singing again inspired an easy egg themed sensory play activity.
I left some egg-shaped pieces of card, some with numbers written on them, outside with a collection of sticks, stones and leaves and a few crayons. It wasn't long before more sticks and pieces of bark were being added to the collection, eggs were being decorated and a nest was being built.
This activity provided a hands-on opportunity for developing children's numeral recognition, counting and ordering skills and, as they played, they used lots of mathematical language including; more, less, longer than, shorter than and bigger.
What you need:
-
Egg-shaped pieces of card (Cut these out from recycled boxes and write numbers on some of them but leave others blank)
-
A collection of objects found outside e.g. sticks, leaves, stones
-
Crayons, pens and/or pencils
Activity develops:
- Fine-motor skills
- Exploration of the natural environment.
- Language and communication skills
- Cognitive skills
- Social skills
- Creativity
